Independence Day (July 4th) - This is the national holiday of the United States. Americans celebrate this day with family and friends, enjoying parades and outdoor celebrations. Barbecues are the main attraction of the day, followed by fireworks in the evening. Even though it is Americas national holiday, independence day is less formal then other holidays throughout the year. Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday in November) - Thanksgiving is said to be created in 1621 when colonists came together and enjoyed a large meal at the end of the first harvest. Since then, Thanksgiving has been celebrated across America with extended families and very close friends. On Thanksgiving, turkey, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and other foods are served for a massive dinner. Mexico is located in North America. Some foods native to Mexico are:
Two main traditions of Mexico are: The Day of the Dead (November 2nd) - A day set aside to remember and honour people who have died. Altars at churches are decorated with flowers, photos, painted skulls and candles. Food and drinks are also placed on the altar to quench the thirst and hunger of the dead. It is also a tradition that loved ones visit grave sites to clean the area and decorate the stones with personalised items. The Feast of Our Lady of Guadeloupe (December 12th) - A celebration of the appearance of the Virgin Mary, Mexico's patron Saint. In preparation for the day, many individuals set up altars in their homes. The night before the feast day, people gather outside of a church to recite prayers and recount the story of the appearance of Mary. On the feast day, children reenact the sightings of Mary in the church carpark. They then say the Rosary and sing songs. After, there is a big feast with lots of food and drinks. Fun facts on Mexico:
